Fenton Bruce's bargain with the Dark One begins with a man who doesn't want to die. He is left on the battlefield at Chickamauga during the Civil War after his friend abandons him. With death approaching, he accepts Malec's offer to save him in exchange for service.
That is a fairly personal way into the Horde's history. Fenton isn't introduced as a king trying to expand his territory. He wants to survive. But the decision gives someone else a claim on what he will do with the life he has just been allowed to keep.
The rewards are real. He gets an extraordinarily long life filled with wealth and pleasure. So are the obligations. Over more than a century, service means witnessing and carrying out terrible things. The comfortable parts of the arrangement don't remove what has been required to sustain them.
His early history includes refusing to carry out a massacre of Native Americans. That moment doesn't free him. Malec demands that he kill the friend who abandoned him instead, and Fenton does. There is still a line he doesn't want to cross, but the person controlling him can redirect the demand toward an old wound. Revenge becomes another way to keep him participating.
Later, he helps bring Cindy into the Dark One's service. He is involved in connecting a new recruit with the same machinery that has held him for so long. Cindy receives Carnage, and another dangerous person becomes more useful to Malec. Fenton has gone from making his own bargain to helping keep that operation running around other people.
His role during the Dream Eater crisis brings that loyalty to a grim conclusion. He comes to recover his master, and when Baba Yaga throws a knife at Malec, Fenton puts himself in its path. The man whose service began with being saved from death dies protecting the person who owns that service.
That ending doesn't make his history simple. He has done awful things, shown reluctance, accepted the rewards, and ultimately protected Malec. Those details belong together. Fenton gives the Horde a very human kind of horror: someone can know what the bargain costs, keep paying it, and spend so long inside it that protecting the bargain's other party becomes his final act.
