Thane is connected to one of the biggest decisions in the early Grimm Fairy Tales stories: releasing the Dream Eater. That's a pretty serious thing to have attached to your name, especially when the reason for doing it is to stop another threat that already seems impossible to handle. He's a Kavari from Oz and one of the figures involved in the council's decisions about the realms. That puts him in a position where he has to think beyond whoever is directly in front of him. A decision made in Myst can affect Oz, Earth, and everyone else connected to them. The disagreement over the Casket of Provenance shows that side of him before things fall apart. Blake wants to destroy it so the Horde can't get it. Thane is concerned about what destroying it might cause. There's a dangerous object in front of them, but getting rid of it also means acting without fully knowing the consequences. He's looking at the risk in the proposed solution. That makes his later decision about the Dream Eater worth sitting with. Once the fighting has gone badly, he goes to the Cave of Shadows and performs the ritual to release it. He accepts a sacrifice in the hope of stopping the Dark One's forces. The situation has pushed him from questioning an irreversible decision to making a desperate one himself. The Dream Eater doesn't stay a manageable answer to the Horde. It becomes a threat that pulls people from across the different stories into the same crisis. Releasing it means everyone now has to deal with something beyond the war they were already fighting. The original emergency doesn't make the new danger any less real. There's also an earlier connection to Baba Yaga's history. Thane is with the people who arrive after her village has been destroyed. They're already too late to stop what happened, and he urges Shang to keep pursuing the Dark One. That moment shows the uncomfortable distance between chasing the person responsible and helping the people left behind. For someone in that village, the damage has already happened. Those decisions give Thane a fairly complicated place among the people trying to protect the realms. He has responsibilities, he understands that there are serious risks, and he still reaches a point where he unleashes something enormously dangerous. The Dream Eater story makes everyone else live with that choice too. It gives him a consequence that reaches far beyond a single fight or a single issue.
