Blake has a lot on his shoulders for someone who can easily get overshadowed by the bigger names in Grimm Fairy Tales. He's the White Knight from Wonderland, he's part of the council dealing with the threat to the realms, and when that council falls apart, he's still out there trying to do something about it.
His position in the argument over the Casket of Provenance gives a pretty clear introduction to the way he thinks. He wants it destroyed before the Horde can use it. Thane worries about what destroying it might do. Blake is looking at the enemy they already have and the damage it could cause with that kind of access. Keeping something powerful around because it might be useful also means accepting the possibility that someone else will take it.
That discussion gets a lot uglier once the attack happens. The council is shattered, and Blake is badly hurt. He's one of the people left trying to continue after an event that has changed the situation for everyone. Having a title and having other people around you to help carry out that responsibility are two very different circumstances.
When Sela and Bolder come back to him, Sela is trying to save Erik. That puts Blake alongside a very personal story even while he has the larger situation in Myst to worry about. They travel toward Tallus, where Druanna may be able to help, but Orcus is closing in on the city. Nobody gets to finish one problem before the next one catches up.
Blake's archery is also worth talking about. His arrows have magical properties, and the fight with Gruel's shadow-dragon form gives him a very practical contribution to a battle involving some enormous powers. He uses an incantation and gets an arrow into the dragon's heart while the others are involved in the fight. He has a specific skill, and there is a moment where that skill is needed.
Bolder becomes an important companion in all of this. Their relationship continues beyond simply being part of the same group around Sela. After the fighting at Tallus, the work of rebuilding the council is still waiting. Blake and Bolder take on that search together, traveling through the realms to find people who can replace the members they've lost.
That gives Blake something more to do than survive and wait for the next attack. He has to think about who can actually help keep these places connected. Someone could be strong enough to win a fight and still be the wrong person to trust with a realm's future.
And the Horde doesn't stop moving while he does that. Orcus has his own mission involving the Dark Queen. Blake is trying to restore something that was broken while the enemy is working to become even more dangerous. He keeps carrying that responsibility into the next journey, even after seeing how badly the previous effort ended.
