6/9 Smart Alec finds something his intelligence cannot handle Alec Thorne's name announces exactly how he wants to be regarded. His intelligence is the reason he belongs among super-powered people, and he has very little patience for anyone failing to appreciate it. Courtney's approach to him begins before the team is assembled. His chess exhibitions make a useful introduction: here is somebody who can demonstrate his superiority in a controlled setting, with everybody else playing a game he understands. Shaman's medicine pouch is a much worse place to test that confidence. During the first battle, Alec takes it and looks inside. The experience destroys his mind. His body survives, but he is no longer an active participant in the fight or a recruit available for the later return. That absence becomes part of the next plot. In #27, the false Guardian asks Shaman what happened to Alec. Shaman explains that he has reduced Alec's body and placed it in the pouch. Courtney then tries to retrieve him, with disastrous results.
