2. Marrina is the graduate who should not disappear from the list There is one qualification to any four-person Gamma roster: Marrina was there earlier. Alpha Flight #2 explains the route. She grows up with the Smallwoods in Newfoundland, and her exceptional swimming eventually brings her to the attention of the government. Dan Smallwood contacts the Ministry of Defense. She enters Department H, starts in Gamma and quickly advances to Beta. By #1's present-day events, she is ready for Alpha. So she belongs in Gamma's overall membership history even though she is no longer sitting beside Lil, Madison, Alec and Wild Child in the original training-tier snapshot. That progression is useful because otherwise Gamma can look like a category for everyone who never gets anywhere. Marrina has already moved through it successfully. It also keeps the system from becoming more rigid in the retelling than it is in the comics. Not every character needs an invented Gamma stint just because Gamma is the usual starting point. Puck, for example, enters Beta on the strength of his existing experience. Marrina is a confirmed Gamma graduate. That is enough; the roster doesn't need to be enlarged by guessing where everyone else must have trained.
