1. The original bottom rung

1. The original bottom rung The original Gamma Flight is Department H's starting tier: Diamond Lil, Madison Jeffries, Smart Alec and Wild Child. That is the group shown in the 1983 introduction. Marrina also belongs in its history, having already moved from Gamma into Beta. These are people being prepared for the possibility of joining Alpha Flight. The usual route is Gamma, then Beta, then Alpha. The letters describe stages in a government training program, not three equal field teams with different territories to patrol. The original Gamma is already gone as an organization when Alpha Flight's ongoing series gets moving. Its members are introduced in the roster material in #1, with their personalities and histories emerging afterward. There are no documented missions of this lineup operating as Gamma. That makes it important to look at the people rather than pretend there is a missing season of adventures to recap. And this is only the original group. The later government team is a different use of the name. For now, Gamma means four recruits who were still at the first level when the money stopped, plus a confirmed former member who had advanced.
