4. Box means Roger Bochs
The Box on the original Beta roster is Roger Bochs. Madison Jeffries is in Gamma at this point, and Jerry Jaxon is not a Beta member at all. Those names become connected to the robot, but they are not interchangeable.
Roger is the engineer who creates Box, with Hudson helping develop it. The early version is operated remotely through a cybernetic headset. Roger is not yet physically merging with the later living-metal armor.
His first substantial scene in Alpha Flight #11 is also worth remembering before labeling him a traitor. Delphine Courtney has visited with an offer to join her project. Roger is appalled by what she is proposing and tries to warn Hudson through Gary Cody.
He cannot get through. Cody is on vacation, and the call ends without Roger reaching anyone who can help. Roger decides to try stopping the scheme himself.
That little sequence tells us more than a roster showing Box beside the villains would. Roger still respects the man who helped him. He is trying to protect Alpha Flight, even though his plan leaves him dangerously close to people who want it destroyed.
For his original Beta story, the inventor and his intentions need to stay attached to the machine.
