7. Roger Bochs and Madison Jeffries change what Box can do
Roger Bochs has his own unfinished business after the first Omega Flight battle. His original robot was used in the attack that killed Mac, and he wants to make sure it cannot be taken over that way again.
He recruits Madison Jeffries in #16. By #22, their work lets Roger merge with the machine. That removes the old distance between operator and robot, but it brings a cost. Damage to Box is no longer something he can always experience safely from elsewhere.
Then the machine becomes the means of keeping Walter alive. Roger's work suddenly serves a purpose very different from the revenge he had been pursuing.
It is also important to keep Roger and Madison separate. Roger is Box's designer; Madison's ability to reshape machinery gives their collaboration possibilities ordinary engineering would not have. They are not interchangeable names for whichever man happens to be around the robot.
By the West Edmonton Mall confrontation, Madison's abilities are decisive against Omega Flight. The book has been developing useful people around the edges of the original roster, and here one of them can deal with a threat the established team has not managed to contain.
