6. Sasquatch's origin stops being a scientific question
The first year left doubts about Walter's gamma experiment. In #23, those doubts arrive in the middle of the team.
Sasquatch is connected to Tanaraq, one of the Great Beasts Snowbird exists to oppose. When the Beast takes control, Snowbird kills the physical form. For Aurora and the others, that means watching a teammate kill Walter.
The explanation does not make the scene painless. Snowbird says his soul survives, which gives them a chance to help him, but the distinction between a dead body and a surviving soul is an awful thing to have to learn while standing over a friend.
Issue #24 takes the rescue into the Great Beasts' realm. The group has to work with Snowbird after what she has done, because her knowledge is essential to the attempt.
Walter returns in the Box robot rather than his own body. Recovering him leaves the team with another problem instead of restoring the old arrangement.
Snowbird also chooses a life with Doug Thompson after the battle. Her connection to the group has always involved duties beyond it. Now she wants room to discover what being human can mean for herself.
