2. Mac and Heather built more than a costume
James Hudson's origin gets room to breathe in the early backup stories. He designed an exploratory suit, then discovered that his employer intended to turn his work into a weapon. His response leaves him with the cybernetic helmet and a very uncertain future.
Heather is already pushing him toward a solution. She helps get his case in front of the Canadian government, and the project that becomes Department H grows from there. The book makes her involvement practical: finding the person to speak to, getting Mac through the door, refusing to let him sit and assume everything is over.
His suit gives him flight, protection and electromagnetic firepower. His engineering also gives the team a reason to exist in the first place. By this series he adopts the name Guardian, another change from the earlier introduction. The backup stories give the reader an inventor who has strong ideas about how his work should be used, a wife who helped make those ideas possible, and a former employer who has not forgotten what happened.
