The followers and the false faces Masque’s group is unsettling before all of its individual members have even been identified. Jean’s encounter around the ruined mansion in Uncanny X-Men #261 leads into a situation where familiar appearances cannot be trusted. The people she is dealing with have been altered to resemble people she knows. That gives Masque a way to interfere with recognition as well as someone’s physical abilities. A face normally tells you something useful. Is this a friend? Someone who needs help? Someone dangerous? When an enemy can manufacture that resemblance, the small moment in which a person trusts what they see becomes an opening. Bliss is one of the named Morlocks associated with this group. Her tongue has a smaller fanged mouth, and her venom can incapacitate a victim. That makes close contact dangerous, particularly when a reassuring appearance has already brought someone within reach. It fits the way this faction operates. There are direct attacks, but there is also deception and the effort to leave an opponent unable to respond. Winning does not require a fair fight if the target can be confused or disabled first. There are other transformed followers in the story, and the group should not be treated as though every figure on a page comes with a complete biography. The limited information matters. We are seeing the people involved in this particular threat, not receiving a reliable census of everyone who lives underground. Nor should their appearance do the moral work for the story. Being visibly different does not make a Morlock dangerous. What makes these encounters dangerous is what the participants are doing: impersonating, attacking and helping Masque control other people. That keeps the focus where it belongs. The larger community contains people trying to survive. This faction is organized around the power Masque is exercising over others.
