Dragoness enters in New Mutants #93 alongside Sumo and Kamikaze. Her confrontation with Sunfire immediately gives her a recognizable point of comparison: another figure attacking through the air with intense energy, but working toward a very different outcome. She ties her anger to Hiroshima in that encounter. That gives her stated resentment a historical reference within the comic, but it does not make her an authoritative explanation of how real radiation works. It is part of her account of herself, offered while she is fighting for Stryfe. Her confidence carries into the following issue. She speaks for the operation readily enough, but Cannonball uses the encounter to get the means of escape. The scene lets her underestimate someone she assumes she has under control. That is a useful distinction in this lineup. Dragoness can be dangerous in the air and still careless with a prisoner. Combat effectiveness does not guarantee judgment in every other part of a mission. The early story gives her a stronger ideological voice than some of the other additions. She can explain the retaliation Stryfe is promising, rather than merely follow him into a fight. The explanation makes the intended victims no less innocent. Hearing a reason for an attack is not the same as being given a justification for it. This is the Dragoness of the Madripoor story. Her later affiliations and biographical details can wait; there is already enough here to distinguish her from the rest of Stryfe’s force.
