Zero is easy to underestimate in a lineup full of people who seem built to break things. The others create most of the noise. Zero makes it possible for them to leave before the consequences catch up. In New Mutants #87, those portals are essential to the MLF’s attack-and-escape approach. There is also a useful limitation: the group cannot simply appear inside a place Zero has never visited. They still need a way through the perimeter. That keeps the teleporter from becoming an answer to every problem before the story even begins. It also explains why the rest of the lineup matters. Strobe can open a route, the others can deal with resistance, and Zero can handle extraction. You can see the operation as a sequence rather than a collection of unrelated powers. If one part fails, the people counting on the next step can be left exposed. Cable recognizes that practical importance. The person who gets everybody away may be a more urgent target than the biggest fighter standing in front of him. It is the kind of judgment that separates fighting a group from simply trading blows with its members. The blank appearance adds to Zero’s early mystery, but there is no need to fill that mystery with information from later stories. At this point, the portals already give him a clearly defined place in the team. He determines how quickly Stryfe’s people can arrive, disappear and become somebody else’s problem.
