The end of Days of Future Present frees Cyclops and Sue from their Hound condition. Rachel helps restore them when the crisis surrounding the adult Franklin is resolved. Ahab’s attempt to define them permanently does not get the final word on who they are. That ending provides relief without making every part of the experience interchangeable. Rachel has a much longer history with the system. A brief encounter can give the others some understanding of what she has endured without making their experiences identical to hers. It is a useful distinction for the wider X-Men story, because this world is full of people who have survived different kinds of control. The fact that one person can recover a particular ability or return to a familiar appearance does not tell you everything about what another person needs. A visible reversal is one piece of a recovery, not a complete account of a life. The Hounds also complicate a simple division between the people who attack and the people who need saving. During these fights, those categories overlap. Ahab benefits whenever the heroes are forced to focus on the immediate danger his captives pose rather than the machinery keeping them captive. That does not leave the heroes with an easy answer. They still have to act, and they still have to protect the people being targeted. But the story asks them to keep hold of a harder responsibility while doing it: remember that stopping someone and writing them off are different decisions. So the roster for this period has to remain a careful one. Ahab is the controller. Rachel is a former Hound confronting her abuser’s return. Cyclops and Sue are present-day captives who are restored. The unnamed Hounds are other victims whose individual stories the crossover does not fully supply. That is enough to make the group worth covering without borrowing anyone from a later incarnation. Ahab’s system is already horrifying because it can make someone’s strength serve the people who are destroying their freedom.
