Sue Richards is captured alongside Cyclops and transformed into a Hound in X-Men Annual #14. Her inclusion matters because this story reaches beyond the regular mutant teams. The Fantastic Four’s family is pulled into the same system of control, and Franklin is at the center of the danger. Sue is ordinarily someone others can shelter behind. Her abilities give her ways to protect people as well as confront an opponent. Having that familiar protection turned against the people who rely on it makes the situation more unsettling than adding one more powerful stranger to Ahab’s side. The people trying to stop her still know who she is. That knowledge places limits on what they are willing to do, even while she is being made to attack them. It is an uneven fight in a very personal sense: affection continues to restrain one side, while the controller has interfered with it on the other. Sue’s situation also shows why a list of powers is an incomplete description of a hero. Two people with similar abilities would not necessarily make the same decisions. What Sue chooses to protect, what she notices and what she refuses to accept are part of her importance. Ahab wants access to the power while overriding the person whose choices give it direction. There is no need to minimize her strength to explain why this is frightening. A powerful person can still be harmed by having control taken away. In fact, the more others depend on what she can do, the more damage someone like Ahab can try to cause through her. This is a temporary, forced condition, not a new heroic allegiance or a decision to abandon her family. Keeping that clear gives Sue the same consideration the story asks for Rachel and the other captives. Recognizing the person underneath the imposed role is part of understanding what a rescue would actually have to accomplish.
