Cyclops becomes one of Ahab’s Hounds in X-Men Annual #14. A familiar leader is captured and turned into an attacker, and the people facing him cannot safely treat the situation as a normal fight with a normal enemy.
Scott’s history makes the transformation especially pointed. His everyday relationship with his own power requires care. The visor, the deliberate direction of a blast, the awareness of everyone around him: those things make restraint part of how Cyclops operates. His ability is useful because there is a person deciding how to use it.
Take that decision away, and everyone who knows him has a problem that cannot be answered by simply remembering how dependable he usually is. A reliable person under someone else’s control can still be dangerous. The danger does not establish that their earlier reliability was fake.
There is a difference between arguing with Scott’s judgment and having his judgment removed. His teammates can disagree with an order, challenge a plan or question how he has handled a relationship. Ahab’s intervention does not belong to that category. It stops him from making the choice in the first place.
The same distinction applies to any attempt to make this a story about Cyclops revealing a hidden desire to attack the people around him. The crossover gives an external cause. Replacing that with speculation about what he secretly wanted would let the person who caused it disappear from the explanation.
His temporary place among the Hounds also expands the threat beyond Rachel’s testimony. Someone the present-day heroes have worked beside is now in front of them wearing the consequences of Ahab’s methods. They are forced to confront what that history means without the distance of another timeline.
Scott needs to be stopped during the attack, but he also needs to be rescued. Both things can be true at once.
