SCP-084: Static Tower

SCP-084: Static Tower SCP-084 makes a radio tower on the horizon feel like a particularly cruel thing to look at. You have a landmark. You have a direction. Everything about that should mean you can work out where you are and make some progress. Inside its affected area, that confidence is useless. From outside, the area is roughly two hundred meters across. Inside, the space appears unlimited, and the tower stays out of reach. One attempt to approach it continued for more than three months without getting there. I think the visible destination is what makes this one work. Total darkness would at least tell you that you don't know where you're going. Here, you can see the thing you're trying to reach. It keeps inviting the same reasonable decision: keep walking toward it. I'd find that much harder to give up on. Distances can suddenly change, and there is a town inside that can't be seen from outside. Its population stays at 343. Normal aging and births don't seem to work, and deaths can reverse themselves. Electronic equipment produces disturbing, unreliable results. After an unpredictable amount of time, leaving also appears impossible. That sounds exhausting before you even start considering what those people have been through. A familiar town should give you some routine to hold onto. Instead, I'd be questioning whether tomorrow means anything useful, or whether an ordinary plan can survive contact with the place. One man says he has been traveling for six years. He's found only about four hundred meters from the town. That is the part that sells the scale to me. Huge distances in horror can become abstract pretty quickly. Years of effort producing an almost insultingly small distance from home is much easier to imagine, and much harder to shrug off. The tower's exact nature remains uncertain. I don't need it to have a personality or a motive for this to be disturbing. Being trapped somewhere that makes your effort meaningless would be bad enough.
