SCP-083: An Abandoned Row Home The first thing I want to know about SCP-083 is who decided the front door gets to lead to a different house than the window. Because that is a ridiculous little distinction to build an anomaly around, and it works surprisingly well. From outside, it's a rundown row house. Enter through a window and that is what you get. Use either door, though, and you find a furnished, maintained interior. The two groups can't see or hear each other, even while looking out at the same street. That alone would make exploring it awkward. Then the furnished version starts changing its floor plan between visits. The total space stays the same, and the front parlor remains familiar, but the rooms beyond it don't reliably stay where they were. I like that the house gives you just enough consistency to encourage a bad assumption. A recognizable entrance is reassuring. You have somewhere to start your map. You can almost imagine getting comfortable with the rules, which is exactly when I'd start worrying about what I hadn't understood yet. The camera experiment makes that concern worse. Equipment remains electronically detectable in its original position, but the rooms containing it are gone when researchers return. One camera eventually comes back with a room that has moved upstairs. Another stays missing. That's the detail I'd keep coming back to. Losing something because it moved is one problem. Being told it's still right there, while having no usable way to get to it, is a much stranger one. What would locating anything actually mean in a place like that? There are also signs of cooking and a recently used fireplace, without anyone being found responsible. The file doesn't settle who's maintaining the place, or whether that question even has the kind of answer we're expecting. I'd rather have that uncertainty than a final paragraph announcing a ghost's name and explaining everything. An apparently ordinary house can stay unsettling for a long time when the simplest question about it, whether anyone is home, still isn't easy to answer. https://t.co/lkHIbILUnf
