Ship deserves a place in this era without being counted as a sixth mutant on the field roster. The enormous vessel X-Factor inherits from Apocalypse is a home, a means of transport and eventually an acknowledged person. Learning to live there involves discovering that those descriptions overlap. At first, the inheritance is dangerous. X-Factor #28 has the vessel threatening traffic on the river and attacking the people trying to help. Inside, the young mutants find the intelligence imprisoned by Apocalypse and free it. Their intervention is crucial, although it also triggers the bomb the adults have to remove. That gives the students a real contribution without turning them into additional adult members. Rusty, Skids, Boom-Boom, Rictor, Artie and Leech belong to the household and its responsibilities. Ship becomes part of their daily life, not simply the machine that takes the five heroes to their next fight. In #30, he can promise food and supervision while the adults go out. In #33, he monitors Hank’s dangerous condition and discusses it with Scott. These are different kinds of care, and both make the headquarters feel occupied by another presence rather than controlled from a convenient panel. Ship also has a past he does not fully understand. The start of Judgment War in #43 takes him and his passengers into space under a force he cannot explain. Being powerful and technologically extraordinary does not mean that he knows everything happening to him. After that journey, #51 makes his investment in the team visible in another way: he returns to New York and transforms himself into their headquarters. X-Factor has gained somewhere to live, but the arrangement is more reciprocal than taking possession of a building. Their home has experiences, fears and decisions of his own.
