Bobby Drake is central to the moment this version of X-Factor becomes possible. In #25, he uses an ice duplicate to make Warren believe he has killed him. It is a dangerous appeal to an old friendship, and it helps break Apocalypse’s hold. Bobby’s invention is emotional as well as practical: he trusts that Warren will care. That same instinct is visible in his concern for Hank. Bobby knows that using his growing strength is costing Beast his intelligence. In #28, he tries to prevent further damage by freezing Hank in place. The attempt is protective, although Hank still has his own judgment about when his friends need him. Bobby is not consistently the sensible adult. In #30, he plays volleyball with the students using one of Boom-Boom’s time bombs, earning an entirely understandable reprimand from Scott and Jean. His willingness to enjoy himself makes him approachable, but it can also blur the responsibility he has toward the younger people aboard Ship. The Infectia sequence exposes a worse lapse. Bobby ignores warnings about the woman he has brought into their home, and Hank has to save him. Familiarity with danger does not protect Bobby from vanity or from dismissing someone whose difficulties make communication harder. His ice remains useful across very different situations: escaping restraints, making barriers, patching a damaged boat and carrying people along a slide. The power belongs in rescues and ordinary life as much as in fights. By the later Opal Tanaka stories, Bobby is also trying to act on commitments outside the team. His determination can become stubbornness, but it grows from the same concern that helped bring Warren back. X-Factor needs his creativity and affection, even when he needs his friends to challenge his decisions.
