Domino takes an operational role above the Edinburgh fight in X-Men Annual #15. She and Chord remain with the aircraft, keeping evacuation available while the others engage the threat below. Her assignment is organized around what the team may need next, rather than what will make the most dramatic immediate impression.
That is an important kind of experience to have in a new group. An operation needs somebody thinking about departure before anyone knows whether retreat will be necessary. Preparing to leave does not express a lack of confidence in the people fighting. It acknowledges that confidence is no substitute for a way home.
Supporting work can be difficult to evaluate because its success may look like nothing happening. A vehicle remains available. A route stays open. A decision can be made without discovering that the practical means to carry it out have disappeared. The absence of a crisis is sometimes the result of someone having prepared for it.
Domino’s position also complicates how authority appears on the page. The person giving the most visible orders is not necessarily doing every part of the thinking. A functioning team distributes attention as well as firepower, allowing different people to watch different problems instead of all concentrating on the same opponent.
None of that requires imagining private motives or importing later information about her. The assignment itself supplies enough to discuss. She occupies a role that assumes judgment, readiness and an understanding of why an escape plan matters before anyone calls for one.
For this Kings of Pain snapshot, that practical contribution deserves space beside the more conspicuous powers. Early X-Force can look like a group built entirely around confrontation. Domino’s work reminds us that getting people out is also part of conducting an operation, even when the fight is still going on.
