Shatterstar’s confrontation with Night Thrasher in New Warriors Annual #1 goes beyond defeating an opponent. After gaining the advantage, he prepares to kill him, and Nova intervenes. The scene makes his judgment a problem for the people around him, not simply another impressive part of his fighting ability. Skill and restraint are separate qualities. A fighter can understand exactly how to win an exchange without understanding what that victory should permit. Treating those as the same kind of expertise gives the most dangerous person in the room authority over a question their training may not answer. That is the difficulty Shatterstar brings into this young team. He can be useful and still make a situation worse. Those possibilities do not cancel each other out, and the others cannot responsibly choose whichever description is more convenient in the moment. The interrupted threat also places responsibility on teammates. A group cannot define its methods only by what the leader intends. It has to reckon with what individual members are prepared to do while acting under its name. If everyone assumes somebody else will intervene, an avoidable killing can become a collective failure. There is room for disagreement about how much trust a new teammate deserves. There is much less room to leave the terms of that trust unstated when lives are at stake. Power without a shared stopping point makes cooperation precarious, even when everyone believes they are fighting the right enemy. For this early snapshot, Shatterstar is interesting because his presence forces that issue into view. The story does not need a later explanation of his origins to make the concern understandable. What matters is the choice he is ready to make here, and the fact that another person has to stop him.
