Moira MacTaggert has to think about more than winning the next exchange of fire. The research center is her responsibility, and the people inside it include patients and children. An attack on the island therefore turns her scientific and practical authority into something much more immediate. At the beginning of #254, she is investigating Polaris’s changed powers. The assault interrupts that work with a different kind of uncertainty. She must respond before she knows everything, using the people and equipment already present rather than waiting for an ideal team to arrive. Her insistence on protective uniforms fits that urgency. The suits have a practical defensive purpose, and she wants the people around her equipped accordingly. The shared appearance can look like the birth of a new X-Men lineup, but her immediate concern is keeping bodies from being injured. The harder question comes with Banshee. Moira wants his help in the defense, while Sharon challenges the danger of sending him back too soon. Those two concerns cannot be made comfortable simply by declaring one person brave and the other cautious. A patient needs protection; the people outside need protection too. Moira’s manner in these scenes also unsettles Sean. The tension is part of this snapshot, without needing later explanations to settle it. Someone can be directing necessary work and still behave in ways that the people closest to them find disturbing. Her place in the group is consequently broader and more uncomfortable than a commander’s name at the top of a list. She has to allocate attention, accept help and make decisions whose costs fall on people she knows. Muir Island’s defenders gather around a home and a research center she has built, and the attack tests the responsibilities that come with both.
