Brigadier Alysande Stuart brings an institutional connection into an unusually improvised defense. She commands the Weird Happenings Organization, and her involvement with Amanda Sefton’s search for Excalibur brings her to Muir Island. She has professional experience with extraordinary situations, even though this visit becomes far more dangerous than expected. Her most direct contribution in #254 is covering fire when Amanda is threatened by the Reavers. She acts from the cliff above them, using the position to give somebody else a chance. The attackers answer by destroying the ground beneath her, and she is captured. That exchange is a useful measure of what training can and cannot accomplish here. Alysande recognizes the need to intervene and uses the means available. Her opponents are also experienced, heavily armed and capable of attacking the position itself. Competence on both sides makes the encounter more dangerous, not less. She belongs among the defenders without having to be recast as a conventional mutant superhero. An emergency group can need judgment, weapons experience and the willingness to expose oneself on another person’s behalf just as urgently as it needs a spectacular power. Her presence also broadens the island’s connections. Muir is part of a world that includes researchers, government organizations, visiting friends and people following missing teammates. The Reavers’ violence collapses those different reasons for being there into one immediate problem. The next issue does not give Alysande a substantial follow-up scene, so it is better not to invent a second phase of the battle for her. What #254 provides is enough to establish her part: a visiting officer sees someone under attack, intervenes effectively enough to draw the enemy’s attention, and pays for doing so. That is a concrete contribution, even without a victory pose.
