Forge is on the cover of Uncanny X-Men #254 with the island’s defenders, but his place in the actual emergency needs a little care. He comes in with Freedom Force. He is reinforcement from outside, rather than another resident already holding a position when the assault begins.
His technical ability has a direct effect on the fight. In #255, the rifle he brings into action destroys Skullbuster. The weapon is suited to the cyborg threat, including disruption of electronic systems. This is an instance where understanding what the enemy is made of can matter as much as bringing more raw power.
There is something useful about that contribution in such a mismatched group. The residents have already been trying to answer a coordinated attack with whatever skills they possess. Forge introduces a tool designed to change the terms of an encounter that has been going badly. He cannot make the damage already suffered disappear, but he can interrupt what is happening next.
He also arrives among people whose existing grievances make cooperation uncomfortable. An emergency can force people into the same vehicle or onto the same battlefield without resolving their reasons for distrusting one another. That tension matters to his position here: helping is necessary even when being welcomed is uncertain.
After the fight, he agrees to improve Muir Island’s security. The promise gives his role a second dimension. A useful defense has to do more than produce one successful shot; it also has to make another attack harder to carry out.
Banshee’s invitation to search for the missing X-Men then gives him a direction beyond the island. For this snapshot, though, his contribution is specific: arrive, intervene and help make the surviving community less exposed.
