Gambit enters the reassembled X-Men with Storm’s trust and very little investment in how the older members think a team ought to behave. His friendship with her got him here. Genosha gives the others more immediate reasons to take him seriously. The rescue attempt in New Mutants #96 puts him alongside Cable, Jean, Forge and Sunspot. When that operation fails, he becomes another prisoner whose powers cannot solve the situation. Uncanny #272 then gives his other skills a chance to matter. He takes a spike while pushing Cable out of danger, and Cyclops realizes that the injury has also supplied him with a lockpick. Gambit frees himself and then the others. There is planning behind the showmanship. He can recognize an opportunity in a terrible position and endure something painful to make use of it. His usefulness to the group does not depend entirely on charged objects or how impressive he looks in a fight. In #273, he offers Storm the option of leaving with him. Her decision to remain makes him challenge her to act as though she means it. He then stays too, eventually joining the others in the common uniform. That is a meaningful step for someone who keeps insisting that he comes and goes on his own terms. His Danger Room victory over Wolverine adds friction rather than instantly settling his place in the hierarchy. Logan is below full strength, and Gambit takes advantage when a projection distracts him. The result shows his opportunism in that encounter without establishing that every future contest would end the same way. For now, Gambit is a newcomer willing to contribute without becoming deferential. The team gets his resourcefulness, his confidence and his habit of pressing people where they are uncomfortable. Learning to live with him is part of learning to be this particular group.
