Jubilee stands with the reassembled X-Men as their youngest member, bringing experience that the adults have good reason to respect. She has already had to look after people under conditions where being older or more powerful did not guarantee anybody’s safety. In Uncanny #271, Wolverine and Psylocke leave her responsible for the powerless Rictor and Boom-Boom while they enter the Citadel. That assignment puts her beside the New Mutants without making her one of their regular members. She belongs to the X-Men’s developing group, and the crossover temporarily gives the three youngsters a shared survival problem. New Mutants #96 keeps them outside captivity while another rescue party falls into Genoshan hands. Avoiding the patrols and recognizing when they cannot win a confrontation are useful contributions. Jubilee’s fireworks are also practical tools: in Uncanny #272, she uses them to remove Boom-Boom’s recognizable mutate clothing before the trio follows the Genegineer’s movements. The return home does not suddenly turn Jubilee into a solemn junior soldier. She complains about the matching uniforms and wants her own colors back. After everything she has done, she still wants some control over how she looks and how the adults treat her. Her reaction to Wolverine’s match with Gambit adds more weight to that independence. She can see that Logan is pushing himself too hard. Watching him lose is upsetting because she knows how vulnerable he has been, and his determination to prove himself does not make her concern less valid. Jubilee’s place in this lineup allows both the capable teammate and the frustrated young person to remain visible. She can make good decisions in danger and still feel overlooked at home. The adults gain someone resourceful and observant; they also take on a responsibility to listen to her, rather than assuming that youth makes her judgment disposable.
