Betsy Braddock returns to the larger team with abilities her friends need and questions about herself that she cannot neatly put aside. Her transformation and conditioning by the Hand remain part of her present experience. Being among familiar people does not automatically make her feel familiar to herself. Genosha demonstrates how effectively she can operate under pressure. In Uncanny #271, she gathers information telepathically from Rictor and Boom-Boom before infiltrating the Citadel with Wolverine. In #272, she pretends that Hodge’s cruelty has broken her and asks to undergo the mutate process. Once removed from the other prisoners, she overpowers her guards and escapes. Her performance creates an opening that a direct attack could not. Those scenes establish judgment as well as combat skill. Betsy can read a situation, disguise her intentions and act when an opponent mistakes apparent surrender for safety. The escape is especially important while the prisoners’ mutant powers are suppressed. Her conversation with Jean in #273 reveals a different kind of uncertainty. She has not contacted her brother, Brian, and worries about whether the Hand’s influence has been completely removed. Wolverine’s confidence in her matters, but it cannot answer every concern she has about her own mind. Later, when Jean is trapped during a Cerebro session, Psylocke acts immediately. She uses her psychic knife on Jean to break the connection and bring her back. The rescue leaves Jean’s recollection confused, so saving her does not also give the team a clear account of the threat. Betsy’s role in the reassembled X-Men holds those two conditions together. She is someone the others can rely on in a crisis, even while trust and recovery remain personal work in progress. Her competence gives her a place; it does not require her doubts to disappear.
