Gambit comes into this part of the X-Men story through Storm’s trouble, rather than through the usual recruitment setting. Uncanny X-Men #266 gives him his substantial introduction as the thief who helps a de-aged Ororo escape the Shadow King’s trap. His first connection is with a person in danger, before he has a place in the team she remembers. That beginning establishes a lot through action. He is comfortable around stolen valuables, quick under pressure and capable of making an ordinary object dangerous with his mutant power. The charged playing cards and staff are recognizable parts of his approach, but his ability to improvise matters just as much. Storm is also someone whose skills he can understand. Their partnership gives both characters room to operate outside a superhero headquarters. They can plan a theft, notice a threat and help each other get away without needing a formal chain of command. By #267, the relationship has developed enough that each is willing to take risks for the other. Nanny’s intervention forces that trust into a more dangerous situation. Ororo’s recovered memories then change the possibilities of their partnership: she has responsibilities and people beyond the life the two of them have started building. Gambit’s arrival belongs in this rebuilding thread because he creates a new route back into the X-Men’s story. He is not a replacement who instantly inherits somebody else’s position on the Outback roster. His connection grows from Storm, then opens toward the larger group. There is also a publication detail worth keeping straight. Annual #14 reached readers before #266, despite the main-series introduction’s place in the story. For this spotlight, #266–267 are the starting point being discussed. Nothing here depends on later revelations about his history or relationships.
