Storm spends this period separated from the people who know her as their leader. She has been physically reduced to childhood, and her missing memories leave her without the full understanding of how she arrived there. The book reconnects her with the skills of a young thief while keeping the danger around her very real. That situation becomes the center of Uncanny X-Men #265–267. The Shadow King’s pursuit brings an old threat into a life that already feels unfamiliar. Ororo can still be resourceful, proud and difficult to control, even when she does not have the knowledge that normally helps her understand an enemy. Meeting Gambit gives her somebody who can operate in that world with her. He understands theft, escape and the need to read a dangerous situation quickly. Their partnership develops through helping each other survive, rather than through him meeting Storm at the mansion and applying to join her team. The confrontation with Nanny in #267 supplies a crucial recovery of memory. Ororo learns again what was done to her and connects her current condition with the life she has lost. Rescuing Gambit becomes part of that return to responsibility. There is an important distinction here between remembering her adult life and immediately having everything restored. By the end of the issue, she can explain that she has obligations beyond their partnership. Her body and circumstances have not simply returned to normal because she remembers the X-Men. That leaves her on the edge of another transition. She has found help and recovered a sense of direction, but her relationship with the scattered team still needs to be rebuilt. The leader begins coming back through the choices she makes, before the familiar team structure is there to receive her.
