Jubilee’s early connection to the X-Men comes through watching them from the edges of their Australian home. When the team falls apart, that position changes very quickly. She becomes the person helping Wolverine survive in a place where the adults who normally handled the danger are missing. Uncanny X-Men #252 makes her contribution hard to dismiss. She is hiding with an injured Logan while the Reavers search for them. Her knowledge of the base and willingness to act matter alongside her mutant plasma bursts. There is very little room for a clean separation between being a frightened teenager and being somebody another person needs. The travel that follows does not magically make her a seasoned operative. Hong Kong introduces dangers she did not choose, including Psylocke while Betsy is under enemy control. Jubilee has reasons to distrust the woman who later joins them, and those reasons do not disappear simply because Wolverine recognizes an old teammate. That tension becomes the center of #261, when Jubilee and Psylocke have to cooperate after Logan is taken by the Harriers. Their mutual dislike makes an already dangerous situation harder. Getting through the situation requires them to make plans together despite it. Jubilee therefore has a role beyond adding a younger voice to Wolverine’s scenes. She remembers what has happened to her. She questions the people around him. She can help him without automatically sharing his history or trusting everyone he trusts. This is the beginning of a working relationship built through rough circumstances, rather than through a conventional first day at Xavier’s school. Her place grows from the things she does and the risks she takes. The team is still scattered, but she has already become important to one of its surviving pieces.
