Banshee has already had a full life with the X-Men before this rebuilding period begins. Sean Cassidy knows what it means to live and fight alongside these people. When their whereabouts become uncertain, that history gives his search a personal weight that a simple missing-person assignment would not have.
Uncanny X-Men #254–255 puts him back in the middle of a crisis on Muir Island. The Reavers’ attack makes the danger immediate, and Sean is again using his sonic powers in combat. The island’s residents and defenders have their own roles in that fight. They should not all be folded into the traveling partnership he forms afterward.
At the end of #255, Sean asks Forge to help search for the X-Men. That is the important turn for this thread. Banshee becomes one of the people actively trying to reconnect the scattered cast instead of waiting for news to arrive.
Their investigation eventually reaches the mansion and brings Jean Grey into the story. In #261–262, the search becomes a rescue when she is abducted into the Morlock tunnels. Jean can also confirm that the X-Men survived, giving Sean and Forge something firmer than hope to work with.
Sean brings experience and familiarity with the people they are looking for. Forge brings a different set of tools and a different relationship with the team. Together, they can follow leads neither would approach in quite the same way alone.
There is something very practical about Sean’s place in this era. Rebuilding requires somebody to make the calls, follow the trail and refuse to let the missing people become a closed chapter. For this part of the X-Men’s history, Banshee is doing that work.
