SCP-080: Dark Form
SCP-080 is difficult to describe consistently. People see different shadowy or humanlike shapes, with two smoking eyes being the one detail they agree on. The Foundation has not even established whether it has a physical body.
The containment rules immediately make this one uncomfortable. Its room must stay dim, with no more than a single seven-watt incandescent bulb. Nothing that could conceal it is allowed inside. If it can hide under something, inside something, or behind a covering, it disappears. A light brighter than an ordinary children's night-light also makes it vanish.
Both outcomes count as containment breaches. Turning on a brighter light might make the room look empty, but the file gives no reason to treat that as getting rid of the danger.
Anyone entering the chamber becomes intensely sleepy. Continued observation can force a person into REM sleep after approximately thirty minutes, with potentially irreversible psychological damage. Watching from another room does not reliably protect someone either.
Two researchers learned that during an observation lasting around forty minutes. They believed their observation room was safe because it had protected them before. Both fell asleep, and the details of what happened when they were retrieved are withheld.
The following day, personnel who had been suffering nightmares and unease slept well and felt better. That detail leads to one of the ugliest decisions in the file: approval to “feed” it a Class-D person every month in an attempt to control the effect on everyone else. The proposal does not amount to a clear explanation of how the entity works.
There are still other uncertainties. Researchers suspect it can influence nearby people without being watched. Some staff cannot see it at all and may be immune, but the wording stops short of confirming that immunity.
The uneasy part is how little dependable information supports the routine. Staff can measure the room, restrict the light, and monitor their dreams, yet they still do not fully understand what they are keeping there. The rules tell them what has gone wrong before. They offer much less reassurance about what might happen next.
