SCP-077: Rot Skull SCP-077 needs people who can read carefully, pronounce everything correctly, and understand what they're saying. Getting the sounds approximately right isn't enough. It's the upper part of a human skull, covered in runes filled with black resin. If the inscription goes unread for twenty-four hours, a glowing green vapor starts coming out of the skull. Biological material touched by that vapor becomes rotten potato matter infected with blight. The Foundation schedules readings every eight hours to stay well ahead of that limit. At least two trained people read together, close to the skull, while a speech-recognition system checks their pronunciation. Linguists train the readers and remain available when the inscription changes. And it does change. The runes follow lunar and astronomical events connected to what is visible from Ireland. Staff can't simply memorize one set of words and treat the job as finished. New inscriptions need phonetic guides and translations, including what the words actually mean. Reading has consequences too. The readers can experience nausea, fever, bleeding, disorientation, and other symptoms. Waiting longer between readings makes those effects worse, but repeatedly using the same person can make the harm accumulate. There's also a substantial chance of developing a potato allergy, which explains the otherwise odd ban on potatoes in the sector's cafeteria. The vapor has its own peculiar restriction. It primarily occupies the skull's effective line of sight. Suitable barriers can provide temporary protection, but sealing the skull inside a container isn't a permanent answer. The pressure eventually breaks the container open. The history is the part that leaves a question behind. Earlier records from the Irish village described the skull favorably, as something protective and providing for people. Later records became fearful and resentful. The entry doesn't settle exactly what changed. It does show the Foundation maintaining a ritual that was already being performed before recovery, with a rotating group of people paying a physical price to keep everyone else safe. Even doing the job correctly still costs them something. https://t.co/QvQlrZqpL9
