Shatterstar arrives at the end of #99 and steps into the action in #100 with an urgent mission of his own. He is looking for the X-Men. Finding Cable and the remaining New Mutants means he has reached people who might help, but not quite the people he expected.
He identifies himself with the Cadre Alliance and brings a conflict from the Mojoverse into the room. His experience is built around fighting, survival and resistance to a world that turns violence into entertainment. The sword-bearing figure entering the story is already accustomed to dangers far beyond a school exercise.
That makes him useful to Cable's emerging group, but it also gives him a reason to negotiate. He has come seeking help for his own people. Joining these mutants connects their immediate battles with a larger obligation, rather than simply supplying the team with another weapon.
His encounter with James Proudstar in #100 gives the newcomer an early point of contact. Both can speak about fighting for a people, though James's recent loss makes the comparison painfully uneven. The conversation suggests a connection that can begin with shared concerns even when almost everything else about them is unfamiliar.
For this era, that is the appropriate scale of the spotlight. Shatterstar has only just arrived. His later relationships, identity questions and adventures do not belong to the evidence available in these last two issues.
What matters at the cutoff is the change he brings into the room. The New Mutants once gathered because a teacher offered frightened young people a place to learn. Here, an already trained fighter seeks an alliance. His needs fit the new direction Cable is proposing, and the team makes space for a mission that began somewhere else.
