Domino enters in #98 with a relationship to Cable that the younger members do not share. She knows how to operate around him, how to respond to danger and how to take part in the conversation without sounding like another student waiting for instructions. Her intervention during Deadpool's attack establishes that immediately. The New Mutants have been interrupted in their own headquarters by an opponent who is there for Cable. Domino helps end the encounter, bringing a sense that Cable's wider professional life can produce useful allies as well as dangerous visitors. That changes the adult presence around the team. Up to this point, Cable has been the main source of the new training and direction. Domino introduces another experienced voice, somebody who can meet his confidence with familiarity rather than simply accepting it. For the students, the timing is complicated. Warlock and Rahne are already gone, Rictor leaves in this same issue, and Roberto's departure follows. Domino's arrival helps establish the shape of the next group while the previous one is still losing people. Across #98–100, Domino is presented as Cable's capable associate and takes part in the final transition. The younger mutants have to get used to another person who already understands his methods.
