Sam is the strongest connection between the beginning of New Mutants and the group taking shape at the end. He has served under Xavier and Magneto, led beside Dani and watched the class survive more upheaval than any school should contain. Cable arrives while that experience is still fresh.
Working with a new mentor does not wipe it away. Sam already knows how to lead people he loves, and he already understands that an adult's confidence does not guarantee a safe outcome. What Cable offers is a way to keep preparing after the old arrangement has broken down.
Their training relationship becomes especially clear in #98, where the Danger Room places Sam and Cable together before Deadpool's attack interrupts the day. The issue presents Sam as somebody Cable considers worth serious attention. He is becoming a partner in the team's direction, even while there is plenty left to learn.
The timing matters. By then, Warlock is dead and Rahne has remained in Genosha. Rictor is about to leave. Roberto's departure follows in #99. Sam's continuity comes with an accumulating list of friends who are no longer in the room.
That gives the final recruitment a human scale. New names do not simply fill empty places on a diagram. Sam has to work beside them while carrying the experience of the people who occupied those places before.
His willingness to continue should not be confused with indifference to what has changed. Staying is an active choice too. He still wants to protect people, still believes his abilities should be useful, and has found a mentor offering a concrete way forward. Through him, the emerging team retains a history that its newest recruits have not lived.
