Dazzler is an especially revealing person to place in a team that is pretending to be dead. Alison once worked to be seen and heard. Now public visibility is something the group has deliberately surrendered, and her home is a remote base filled with teammates who cannot offer the life she originally wanted. That doesn't make her useless or unwilling. Her sound-to-light powers provide serious force, and the Australian missions give her plenty to do. It does mean that the cost of the arrangement has a particular shape for her. A performer can accept dangerous work without forgetting the stage. Her relationship with Longshot also helps give the base the feeling of a household rather than a military installation. Attraction, affection and uncertainty continue while the larger threats build. These people haven't stopped having personal lives just because the world has been encouraged to mourn them. Uncanny #244 is the clearest change of air. Alison joins Storm, Rogue and Betsy for a trip away from Australia that puts clothes, shopping and ordinary social space back into the book. Jubilee's presence and the resulting trouble prevent it from remaining an uneventful outing, but the desire behind it is entirely reasonable. Nobody should have to defend wanting an afternoon that isn't about survival. That is part of what Dazzler brings to this cast. She can participate fully in the fights and still make the loss of an ordinary life visible. Her frustrations aren't proof that she takes the job less seriously than the people who seem more comfortable with it. The blue costume and dazzling effects are memorable, but the stronger thread is Alison trying to remain a whole person inside an increasingly consuming team identity. The Outback offers shelter. She keeps reminding the story that shelter and a satisfying life are different things.
