Amara’s role in this transition begins with leaving the New Mutants rather than arriving alongside the new figures who appear later. New Mutants #56 makes her decision to transfer to the Massachusetts Academy explicit, following the confrontation involving Bird-Brain and the Hellions.
Her feelings about Empath are part of that decision. They are also a reason to keep the power imbalance in view. Manuel can manipulate emotions, so a relationship involving him cannot be discussed as though questions of influence are irrelevant. Amara wants to understand her feelings, but the people around her have good reasons to worry about the situation.
New Mutants #62 follows her and Empath toward Nova Roma. The journey becomes a survival story, and Amara has knowledge and practical skills that matter in that environment. Her abilities are powerful, yet she also has reasons not to use fire recklessly around the rainforest.

For the team index, this is a departure and a separate strand. Amara should not be counted as an active New Mutant throughout the Bird-Brain aftermath, Gosamyr adventure and Inferno simply because she appeared in the previous class lineup.
She remains connected to those people, and news from her still reaches them. Changing schools does not erase the friendships or experiences that came before it. It does change who is present when the next crisis arrives. Her movement toward the Hellions is one of the early signs that the expanded class is no longer going to continue in its familiar form.
