Doug’s contribution to the Bird-Brain story gets to the heart of why a language power matters. The others can see that this strange creature is frightened or hungry. Doug can begin turning unfamiliar sounds into an actual exchange of meaning. In New Mutants #57–58, communication helps the team understand that Bird-Brain has a history and people he wants to help. He is more than an escaped curiosity. Without that understanding, the New Mutants could have protected him physically and still missed what he was trying to tell them. Doug’s ability does not remove the physical imbalance between him and many of his teammates. When the group reaches the Ani-Mator’s island, the environment is dangerous whether or not its victims can be understood. In #60, Doug is shot while protecting Rahne. The death happens to somebody who has already demonstrated exactly why the team needs him. That distinction deserves emphasis. The story does not establish that communication was useless. It shows that a useful, courageous person can still be vulnerable to a weapon. His intelligence and willingness to help cannot provide the bodily protection that his mutation never promised him. The following issues keep Doug present through the reactions of the people who knew him. Their memories, guilt and attempts to understand the loss are part of his place in the team’s story. He should not be left in a later roster as though nothing happened, but he should not disappear from the discussion the instant his active membership ends either. This spotlight stops with what these issues show. Doug’s life in the original class includes curiosity, friendship, insecurity and an ability that opens doors for other people. His death changes the group because those things belonged to a person they loved, not simply a function they now need somebody else to perform.
