Colossus needs a separate place in this reconstruction rather than being slipped into every field lineup as though nothing happened. The Massacre hurt him badly. His presence in the wider X-Men story and his readiness for an ordinary mission are not the same thing. Piotr had always made physical protection look straightforward from a distance. He could become steel and stand between a threat and somebody more vulnerable. The injuries inflicted during the fighting undermine that expectation. Having an armored body does not mean he can simply absorb every consequence and get back up for the next adventure. That matters to the new roster. The X-Men are not adding Dazzler, Psylocke, Longshot and Havok because the old household has become boring. They are responding to a disaster that has removed familiar people from action. Piotr is one of the reasons the empty spaces are painfully specific. Nightcrawler and Kitty are injured as well, and neither belongs on the rebuilt active field list for this window. Their circumstances differ, but together their absences change the team's emotional balance. The people arriving now are joining a community whose established friendships are interrupted by recovery and uncertainty. For Colossus, the later return to the field should be allowed to remain a return. Uncanny #225 is the useful marker beyond the main #213–219 reconstruction span. The consequences of the injury do not simply vanish with that renewed participation, either. Keeping those stages separate gives Piotr more dignity than treating him as a temporarily unavailable power set. He is a teammate whose body has failed to provide the safety everyone associated with it. Rebuilding the X-Men includes making room for that reality, not rushing past it because a roster illustration looks better with its familiar steel giant back in place.
