Alex Summers already knows the X-Men when he comes back into their orbit. That makes #219 a very different recruitment story from Psylocke's or Longshot's. He isn't discovering that this group exists. He is discovering how much its circumstances and behavior have changed. His investigation puts him on the wrong side of the team's security measures. Betsy's interference with his memories has not held, and the others have to confront what he now knows. Their fear of the Marauders is understandable. The way that fear begins to turn an old ally into a potential problem is much harder to accept. The discussion reaches the point where killing Alex is proposed. Storm refuses. Even allowing that option into the conversation tells him something about the atmosphere he has walked into. This is not the reassuring homecoming that the presence of familiar faces might suggest. Alex joins instead. That outcome should not flatten the unease of the scene into a cheerful welcome. He is choosing to take responsibility within a situation that has already shown him how desperate the people involved have become. Membership puts him inside the danger rather than safely outside it with an explanation. There is another distinction worth keeping: this is Havok returning, not a first introduction to superhero work. His plasma powers and previous experience are substantial additions, but the story's interest lies partly in his perspective as someone who can compare these X-Men with the people he remembers. By the end of this reconstruction window, Alex helps make the group look closer to a functioning team again. His arrival also exposes how far from normal it still is. One of the sharpest questions in #219 comes simply from putting a former member in the room and letting him see what now passes for a practical discussion.
