Longshot arrives carrying the kind of strangeness the X-Men usually have to travel somewhere else to find. His history involves Mojo, entertainment as exploitation and a world whose rules do not line up neatly with ordinary life on Earth. Even breakfast can need an explanation. Annual #10 is the important arrival anchor. Mojo's interference turns the X-Men's lives into material for his own purposes, and Longshot becomes part of the group that carries on afterward. It is a very different entrance from somebody answering Xavier's call or arriving at the school because a mutation has just appeared. That difference remains visible when he appears with the rebuilding team in the regular book. Around Dazzler, Psylocke and Rogue in #217–218, he is learning the people as well as the setting. The humor of his unfamiliarity is real, but it should not obscure the reason he is unfamiliar. He has been shaped by a world that treated lives as something to manipulate. His acrobatics, throwing blades and unusual good fortune give him a distinctive place in action scenes. He doesn't look or fight like a replacement for any one injured X-Man. The group has acquired somebody whose whole approach changes its rhythm. There is a useful emotional contrast too. These X-Men have fresh reasons to be suspicious of outsiders and catastrophically bad luck. Longshot brings openness and literal luck into that household without magically repairing what happened to it. His presence allows moments of levity that don't require everyone to have recovered. He belongs in the reconstruction because rebuilding is not only a matter of restoring lost strength. New people bring new habits, unexpected questions and reasons to keep talking around a breakfast table. Longshot makes the team stranger at a moment when simply recreating the old arrangement is no longer possible.
