The mansion is still standing. That doesn't mean the X-Men have come home to safety. The Mutant Massacre has left friends badly injured, the Marauders remain a threat, and Sabretooth can bring the fighting right through the front door. Rebuilding this team means deciding who can go out tomorrow while worrying about who will survive tonight. Storm, Wolverine and Rogue provide the continuity. Around them, the group acquires people who do not arrive with matching experience or matching expectations. Betsy Braddock has something to prove. Alison Blaire has a life she never intended to spend on permanent superhero duty. Longshot brings an entirely different understanding of the world. Alex Summers knows the X-Men already, which makes the changes he finds particularly unsettling. The entry points are spread out: Annual #10 belongs to Longshot's arrival story, #213 brings Psylocke into the team, #214 brings Dazzler, and #219 brings Havok back. Those issues describe a reconstruction, not a single recruitment day. Annual chronology also needs a little care rather than simply treating the publication order as an uninterrupted diary. Colossus belongs in this account as an injured established member whose return takes longer. Nightcrawler and Kitty Pryde are casualties of the same disaster, not available members of the rebuilt field squad. Leaving that distinction out makes the whole period look much tidier than it is. What emerges is a team that can still joke, argue and get caught in wonderfully strange adventures, but has lost its confidence in ordinary boundaries. Home and battlefield overlap. Friendship and security clash. The newcomers are not replacing personalities on a checklist. They are joining people who have just learned how quickly their familiar world can come apart.
