Karma returns to this stage of the New Mutants with a history that separates her from an ordinary school newcomer. She has already endured the Shadow King’s control and fought to reclaim her own life. Now she is trying to continue her education while remaining responsible for her younger brother and sister. Her possession ability can turn a confrontation around without a display of physical force. It is also a power that makes questions of agency very immediate. After what happened to her, being able to direct another person’s body is not a small detail in her characterization. Control is something she exercises, something she has lost and something she has had to recover. The school offers a community, but it cannot contain every obligation she has. The discovery that Leong and Nga are missing during the #46–50 sequence makes the search urgent, and by #54 her family situation is pulling her away from regular membership. That departure should be recorded as its own development rather than leaving her in every later class lineup by default. There is a practical distinction here between being part of the New Mutants and being available for each adventure. Karma belongs to the team’s history and to the lives of these friends. Her responsibilities can still require her to leave the place that has been supporting her. She also changes the balance of the group simply by being somebody who has had to think about survival and dependents before most of her classmates. That does not mean she always has the answer, or that her own needs disappear. It means her education is taking place alongside a family crisis. Any overview of Magneto’s class that only lists combat powers would miss a large part of why Karma is there and why she eventually has to step away.
