SCP-072: The Foot of the Bed
SCP-072 gives that childhood fear about leaving your feet outside the blanket a very specific set of rules.
It appears in an infected bed when someone reaches REM sleep with a foot exposed. A long, shadowy hand emerges and taps the sleeper awake. They can feel what happens next, but can't move or call for help.
The hand removes the exposed foot in pieces, retreating into the bed between each removal. The file doesn't establish whether it eats what it takes. Destroying an infected bed reveals no trace of the missing material.
Nearby beds can become infected too. Even a sleeping bag was affected during testing, which is why containment keeps sleeping materials away.
It won't manifest above a low light threshold. That sounds reassuring on paper, until you consider how ordinary the conditions for an attack are. A dark bedroom, somebody asleep, a blanket pushed aside.
The damage can be survived with treatment, but the file also describes lasting fear around sleep. Going to bed is supposed to be the point where you can finally relax. This one makes even that feel difficult.
