SCP-070: Iron Wings
SCP-070's wings are too heavy to offer him much freedom.
They're made from jointed iron bars and chains tipped with barbed arrowheads. They emerge from a man's back, move independently, and can lash out or anchor themselves into nearby surfaces. He says he can't control them, yet damaging them causes him pain.
He usually stays suspended from his containment room's walls and ceiling, often sedated. The Foundation keeps armed guards out of sight because perceived threats can provoke a violent response. Shooting at him risks making an already dangerous situation worse.
Then there's the containment breach in which he apparently never wakes up. The chains carry him through the facility by grabbing walls and ceilings. He reaches the canteen, eats and drinks, then returns to his room. Afterward, he remembers none of it.
His own account of their origin offers little explanation: he woke in a scrapyard with them after taking peyote the previous night.
There's no clear villain driving this one. The man is burdened with something that protects him, hurts him, and moves him around without permission. The chains that can break him out leave him hanging inside his cell.
Personal note: This really reminded me a lot of Angel from the X-Men, just the wings in general and everything he's been through. If you've read the X-Men from the beginning, you know who Warren Worthington III is. He's powerful, passionate, emotional, and he loves himself. He's rich and a little prideful, but he's an amazing character with a huge backstory and so much personality.
He started with natural wings, and losing those completely destroyed him. His wings were critically injured, and Cameron Hodge manipulated the doctors into amputating them. Then came the plane explosion that looked like suicide, but Hodge had sabotaged it to murder Warren and make it look that way. Apocalypse rescued him and gave him those metal wings, turning him into Death for the Four Horsemen. Hodge's betrayal took so much away from him, and Apocalypse changed his whole nature.
That's where Angel is at the point I'm reading. I know a lot about X-Men history, but this is my first time reading through the entire thing. I think he gets his real wings back at some point, but I don't know when, and I haven't reached that. For now, I've been watching him fight with that dual nature and those wings. So Iron Wings was very close to that image for me.
