SCP-069: Second Chance
SCP-069 can continue a dead person's life, copying their memories, mannerisms, fingerprints, and DNA. Leave it alone with a fresh body and the body disappears. The person apparently comes back.
Except SCP-069 remembers nothing about its earlier identities or the ability that brought it there.
Each new identity develops an urge to settle unfinished business. Family visits, financial obligations, a will. It can remain that person indefinitely, but keeps preparing their life for an ending it doesn't understand.
The Foundation first noticed a firefighter surviving a fire that should have killed him. At another fire, he disappeared and a civilian emerged instead.
Later, SCP-069 took the identity of a dead Foundation guard. Cooperation became easier, until a researcher revealed that the guard's family had been informed of his death. The revelation led to a suicide attempt and tighter supervision.
The Foundation sees an anomaly impersonating an employee. The person inside containment has that employee's memories and a family grieving him outside. Even if that distinction is correct, it gives him little comfort.
The title becomes a painful question. Who is actually getting the second chance, and how much of a life are they allowed to have?
