SCP-066: Eric's Toy
SCP-066 used to be the anomaly you might want to spend time with. Pull its strands of yarn and ribbon, play a few notes, and something harmless would happen. Once it became a friendly kitten. Another time it produced a birthday cupcake.
Then somebody tried cutting a piece off for testing.
It rolled away from the scissors, asked whether the man was Eric, and changed after he said no. Whatever relationship it had with people before that incident was over.
Now it produces effects just because a human is nearby. Beethoven played loudly enough to permanently damage people's hearing. A room went completely dark for five hours, with people hearing breathing behind them. Its strands can also wear down the inside of its containment box.
The Foundation has to replace damaged boxes using a robotic arm fast enough to finish before an effect starts. Recording devices left inside get destroyed.
And between these incidents, it keeps saying Eric's name.
The file never explains who Eric is. The earlier kitten and cupcake make that question harder to forget. There was a gentleness to those interactions that the containment procedures can no longer afford to expect.
