Quasar looks as though a piece of the night sky has joined the Imperial Guard. The dark, star-speckled body and yellow costume make him especially appropriate for a confrontation beneath a sky full of impossible cosmic machinery. His contribution to the late battle is more down to earth. Wolverine threatens Astra, and Quasar steps in to deal with him. The moment gives the intimidating design a straightforward purpose: get between a teammate and the claws coming toward her. It is a useful way to introduce another heavy-looking fighter without bringing the whole story to a halt. He doesn't need to explain where he comes from. His attention is on the immediate danger to somebody beside him. The protective gesture doesn't excuse the Guard's mission. They are still preventing the X-Men from stopping D'Ken. It does show why reducing them to a faceless extension of the emperor would lose something. The members can care about one another while helping sustain a disastrous order. The starfield appearance gives Quasar a cosmic scale before he does anything. His intervention brings that image down to a much smaller distance: the space between a teammate and the man trying to hurt her.
